Bible journaling is a great way to get more out of your Bible reading. It can help you connect with the scriptures on a deeper level and it’s a lot of fun! Here are 3 questions I get asked most often by people wanting to start Bible Journaling.

What Supplies Do I Need?

Thankfully, you don’t need much: a Journaling Bible, a pencil, a plastic eraser, and a no-bleed pen. At the end of the post is a link to a list of things I use regularly in journaling. If you buy from the link, I will earn a few cents, but please shop local if possible. At the link you’ll be able to see what to get; I usually shop at Hobby Lobby, but they don’t have a quick & easy way to share their products online. (If you’ve found a way, please let me know.) You probably already have everything you need except maybe the actual journaling Bible. If you have a pen you like to write with, test it first. Write something on a scrap piece of paper, then brush water over it. Did it smear or bleed? If yes, just know that you can’t use markers or watercolors over it.

How To Get Started Bible Journaling

  • Start small. Don’t try to do too much at first. Just pick one or two verses in your Bible that you want to focus on and add simple embellishments.
  • Don’t worry about mistakes. Journaling is a process of self-discovery, so there is no such thing as a “wrong” way to do it. Just relax and enjoy the process! Let God speak to you as you worship him with art.
  • Be creative! Journaling is all about expression, so don’t be afraid to try new things. If you’re not sure how to start, just look at some examples online or in magazines for inspiration.

Where To Find Inspiration

You can find great examples of journaling in your Bible on Pinterest or Instagram. There are also many books and magazines available that feature beautiful examples of Bible journaling. Once you have found some inspiration, just start! Compare your work with the work you did yesterday, not with the work of artists who’ve worked years to learn their craft.
